What is Kundli Matching?

Kundli Matching, also written as Kundali Matching, is the Vedic astrology method for measuring marriage compatibility between two people from their birth charts. It compares the Moon's nakshatra and sign in both charts across eight factors and produces a single compatibility score out of 36. For generations this has been the very first step families take before fixing a marriage, and our tool performs the full Kundli Matching by date of birth instantly, free of charge and without any login.

The same process is known by different names. In Hindi it is called Kundli Milan or Kundali Milan, where milan means union, and in English it is widely known as Horoscope Matching for marriage. Whether you call it Kundli Matching, Kundli Milan, or Horoscope Matching, the calculation and the score out of 36 are identical, and this tool performs all of them. In some regions the same check is also called Patrika Matching.

The purpose of Kundli Matching is not to deliver a simple pass or fail. It is to reveal where two people are naturally in harmony and where they may need patience and understanding, so that both families enter a marriage with clear eyes. The score is a summary, and the breakdown beneath it is where the real insight lies.

How Kundli Matching Works

Kundli Matching rests almost entirely on the Moon. In Vedic astrology the Moon represents the mind and emotions, so the position of the Moon at birth, both the nakshatra it occupies and the sign it sits in, becomes the basis for measuring how two minds will meet. From each person's date, time, and place of birth, the tool calculates the exact Moon nakshatra and Moon sign, then compares the two charts across the eight factors known as the Ashtakoota, or eight kootas.

Each koota examines a different layer of compatibility, from temperament and intellect to health and intimacy, and each is worth a fixed number of points. Added together they produce the well-known score out of 36. Because the entire calculation depends on the Moon's exact position, accurate birth details matter a great deal. If you do not know your nakshatra, the free Nakshatra calculator will find it for you, and the Vedic birth chart calculator shows the full chart behind each score.

The 8 Kootas of Ashtakoota (Guna Milan)

The score out of 36 is built from eight kootas, each worth a fixed number of points. They are weighted unevenly: Nadi carries the most at 8 points and Bhakoot 7, which is why these two dominate the final verdict, while Varna at 1 point has the lightest influence. The detailed points system is explained on our Guna Milan and Ashtakoota Milan page. Here is what each koota measures:

Varna

1 point

Spiritual compatibility and the natural temperament of each partner, graded from Brahmin to Shudra. It checks that the couple share a compatible inner nature.

Vashya

2 points

Mutual attraction and influence: who naturally draws and who naturally leads. It reflects the magnetic pull and balance of control between the two.

Tara

3 points

Destiny, fortune, and health, measured from the birth nakshatra of each partner counted from the other. It indicates the general luck and well-being of the union.

Yoni

4 points

Physical and intimate compatibility, based on the animal symbol of each nakshatra. It describes sexual harmony and instinctive understanding between partners.

Graha Maitri

5 points

Mental and intellectual rapport, derived from the friendship of the two Moon sign lords. It governs lasting affection, trust, and shared outlook.

Gana

6 points

Temperament and behaviour, classified as Deva (divine), Manushya (human), or Rakshasa (demonic). It measures how easily the two natures live together day to day.

Bhakoot

7 points

Emotional bond, love, and the health and prosperity of the family, read from the Moon sign relationship. Certain placements create Bhakoot Dosha.

Nadi

8 points

Health, genes, and progeny, the single most important factor. A shared Nadi creates Nadi Dosha and scores zero, which is why it carries the most weight.

How to Read Your Score Out of 36

Once the eight kootas are added together, the total out of 36 is read against traditional thresholds. A score of 18 and above is considered acceptable, 24 and above good, 28 and above very good, and 33 to 36 excellent. A score below 18 is treated as a weak match. The number alone is never the full story: a match with a strong Bhakoot and Nadi but a low Vashya behaves very differently from the reverse, even at the same total.

33 - 36
Excellent
28 - 32
Very Good
24 - 27
Good
18 - 23
Acceptable

A very high score points to an easy, naturally harmonious match, while a mid-range score simply means the couple will do well in some areas and need to work in others, which is true of most marriages. A low total is a signal to examine the chart more carefully rather than a reason to walk away, especially when dosha cancellations or a strong Navamsa are present.

Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha

Two of the eight kootas can create a dosha, or affliction, when they score zero, and because they carry the highest points their absence pulls the total down sharply. Understanding them is central to reading any Kundli Matching result.

Nadi Dosha

Occurs when both partners share the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya, or Antya) and scores 0 out of 8. Traditionally linked to health and progeny, it is the most weighted dosha, but it is cancelled in several cases, such as when both share the same Moon sign with different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra with different padas.

Bhakoot Dosha

Arises from certain Moon sign relationships, such as 6/8 or 2/12 between the two signs, and scores 0 out of 7. It is associated with emotional bonding and family welfare, and it too has recognised cancellations, for example when the sign lords are friends or are the same planet.

The key point is that classical texts provide clear cancellation rules for both doshas. A Nadi or Bhakoot Dosha that is cancelled does not carry the same weight, which is why an experienced reading looks past the raw score to whether a dosha actually applies in practice.

Mangal Dosha in Matching

The matching score out of 36 does not include Mangal Dosha. A person with Mars placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house is considered Manglik, and most families check this separately alongside the matching score. Mangal Dosha has its own cancellation rules, including the situation where both partners are Manglik, which is often said to neutralise the effect. Our free Mangal Dosha calculator reports the Manglik status and severity for either chart, so you can review it together with the Kundli Matching result.

Beyond the Score: A Complete Reading

The eight-koota score is the starting point of compatibility, not the whole of it. A complete reading weighs the strength of the 7th house of marriage in both charts, the Navamsa (D9) chart that reveals the deeper quality of the marriage, the condition of Venus and Jupiter as the natural significators of love and partnership, and the current dasha periods that time when marriage and its events unfold. Two charts with a modest score of 36 can still share a strong Navamsa and favourable 7th-house lords, which is why the number should never be read in isolation. Our guide to marriage prediction by date of birth explains how these factors shape a marriage beyond the matching score.

How to Use This Kundli Matching Tool

Using the tool takes only the birth details of both partners. Enter the date, time, and place of birth for the boy and the girl, then generate the report. You receive the compatibility score out of 36, a factor-by-factor breakdown of all eight kootas, the Moon sign, nakshatra, and lagna of each person, and a clear note of any Nadi or Bhakoot Dosha. There is no signup and no cost. If you would rather compare two signs on their own, the zodiac compatibility tool does that directly, while this page performs the full chart-to-chart match between two people.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kundli Matching (also written Kundali Matching) is the Vedic astrology method of checking marriage compatibility between two people using their birth charts. It compares the Moon nakshatra and Moon sign of both people across eight factors and produces a single compatibility score out of 36. A higher score indicates greater natural compatibility.
Yes. Kundli Milan is the Hindi term, Horoscope Matching is the English term, and Kundali Matching is another spelling, but all three describe the same process and produce the same score out of 36. The only difference is the name, which varies by region and language.
A score of 18 or above is generally considered acceptable for marriage. 24 and above is considered a good match, 28 and above very good, and 33 to 36 is excellent. A score below 18 is traditionally regarded as a weak match. However, the total score is only part of the picture: which specific factors are low, and whether any dosha cancellations apply, matters just as much as the number itself.
From each person's date, time, and place of birth, the exact Moon nakshatra and Moon sign are determined. These drive the eight factors: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi, each worth a fixed number of points that add up to 36. Accurate birth time is important because the Moon changes nakshatra roughly every 24 hours, which can shift several scores.
Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners share the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya, or Antya), scoring 0 out of 8. It is traditionally the most serious dosha and relates to health and progeny. Bhakoot Dosha arises from certain Moon sign relationships (such as 6/8 or 2/12) and scores 0 out of 7. Both have recognised cancellation rules in classical texts, so a dosha alone does not automatically rule out a match.
The matching score itself does not include Mangal Dosha (Manglik status). Mangal Dosha is checked separately by looking at the placement of Mars in each chart. Many families review both the matching score and the Manglik status of both people before reaching a conclusion. You can check it with our free Mangal Dosha calculator.
Not on its own. A low matching score is a prompt to look deeper, not a verdict. A complete reading weighs the strength of the 7th house, the Navamsa (D9) chart, the position of Venus and Jupiter, current dasha periods, and any dosha cancellations. Two charts with a modest score can still share a strong Navamsa or favourable 7th-house lords.
It can be attempted, but the result becomes approximate. The Moon moves through a nakshatra in roughly 24 hours, so without an accurate time the Yoni, Gana, Nadi, and Tara scores may be wrong, especially if the Moon was near a boundary. For a reliable match, the exact birth time of both partners is strongly recommended.
It is strongly recommended. The Moon moves through one nakshatra in roughly 24 hours and one Moon sign in about 2.25 days, so an accurate birth time gives the most reliable Yoni, Gana, Nadi, and Bhakoot scores. If a birth time is unknown, the result should be treated as approximate, especially when the Moon is near a sign or nakshatra boundary.
Online Kundli Matching is as accurate as the birth details you enter. The eight-factor calculation is precise and follows the same classical rules an astrologer uses, so the score and breakdown are reliable. What it does not do on its own is interpret the wider chart, which is where a complete reading or our AI astrologer adds value beyond the number.
