About Vedic Planetary Positions

This calculator shows all 9 planetary positions in the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac. The sidereal zodiac is aligned with the fixed stars and uses the Lahiri ayanamsha to account for the precession of the equinoxes. All positions are calculated for noon on the selected date. Retrograde status is shown for the five planets that can go retrograde: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn.

To see how current planetary positions interact with your birth chart, use the Transit Calculator. For a rashi-based overview of current transits affecting your Moon sign, use the Rashifal tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tropical astrology (used in Western astrology) measures planetary positions from the vernal equinox, which shifts over time due to precession. Sidereal astrology (used in Vedic astrology) measures positions against fixed stars. The difference between the two is called the ayanamsha, which is currently about 23-24 degrees. This calculator uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsha, the standard for Vedic astrology.
A planet is retrograde when it appears to move backward in the sky relative to the background stars, as observed from Earth. This is an optical effect caused by the relative speeds of Earth and the planet in their orbits. In Vedic astrology, retrograde planets (except Rahu and Ketu, which are always retrograde) are considered to act with increased intensity or inwardness. The Sun and Moon never go retrograde.
Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes, the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. They are not physical bodies but mathematical points always 180 degrees apart. Rahu is the north node (ascending) and Ketu is the south node (descending). In Vedic astrology, they are treated as shadow planets and are always in retrograde motion. Rahu and Ketu change signs approximately every 18 months.
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, while this calculator uses the Vedic sidereal zodiac. With the current ayanamsha of approximately 23-24 degrees, all planet positions will appear to be about one sign earlier than their Western counterparts. For example, someone whose Sun is in 5 degrees Aries in tropical astrology would have their Sun in roughly 11-12 degrees Pisces in the sidereal system.
