What are Vedic Planetary Transits?

In Vedic astrology, planetary transits (Gochar) show where the planets are positioned in the sky today relative to your natal birth chart. As each planet moves through the zodiac, it passes through different houses of your natal chart and forms connections with your natal planets. These transits activate specific areas of life and are used alongside the Vimshottari Dasha system to time events and life experiences.

The most impactful transits come from the slower-moving planets. Jupiter spends about one year in each sign, and its transit through auspicious houses from your natal Moon or lagna is considered one of the most beneficial influences in Vedic timing. Saturn spends about 2.5 years per sign and is the planet most closely watched for its effects on health, career, and life direction. For a complete picture of how transits interact with your running Dasha periods, the AI Astrologer can analyze both together.

Understanding Sade Sati

Sade Sati (literally "seven and a half") is the 7.5-year period during which Saturn transits through the sign before your natal Moon, through your natal Moon sign, and through the sign after. It is one of the most discussed transits in Vedic astrology and is traditionally associated with increased obstacles, hard work, and karmic lessons. The middle phase -- when Saturn is directly on your natal Moon sign -- is considered the most intense.

The effects of Sade Sati vary considerably based on Saturn's placement in your natal chart. Someone with a well-placed Saturn, or whose natal lagna or Moon is in Capricorn or Aquarius (Saturn's own signs), may experience this period as one of disciplined growth rather than hardship. The calculator above will flag Sade Sati automatically if Saturn is currently transiting within your Moon's Sade Sati range.

Jupiter Transits

Jupiter transiting the 1st, 5th, 9th, or 11th house from your natal Moon or lagna is considered highly auspicious. These positions are called the Kendra and Trikona houses and amplify Jupiter's benefic effects for marriage, children, career growth, and spiritual progress.

Saturn Transits

Saturn transits are slow and carry long-term consequences. Transit through the 3rd, 6th, or 11th house from natal Moon is generally considered favorable. The 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses trigger Sade Sati. The 4th, 7th, and 8th houses often bring pressure to the areas those houses represent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Planetary transits (Gochar) refer to the current positions of planets in the sky compared to your natal birth chart. As planets continue moving after your birth, they pass through different signs and houses of your natal chart, activating those areas of life. Transits work in conjunction with the Dasha system -- a transit becomes most potent when it aligns with the themes already active in your Mahadasha period.
In Vedic astrology, the transit house is calculated from your natal Lagna (ascendant) using the whole sign house system. If your natal lagna is in Taurus, then Taurus is your 1st house, Gemini your 2nd, and so on. The transit house shown here indicates which of your natal houses each planet is currently transiting through.
Sade Sati is a 7.5-year period that begins when Saturn enters the sign just before your natal Moon sign, transits through the Moon sign itself (the most intense phase), and ends when Saturn leaves the sign after your Moon sign. The term means "seven and a half" in Hindi. Sade Sati is traditionally considered a period of increased challenges, transformation, and karmic work, though its actual effects depend heavily on Saturn's placement in the natal chart.
The most impactful transits in Vedic astrology are typically Jupiter and Saturn, as they move slowly and occupy a sign for months or years. Jupiter transiting the 1st, 5th, 9th, or 11th house from your natal Moon or lagna is generally considered auspicious. Saturn transiting through or adjacent to your natal Moon sign activates Sade Sati. Any planet transiting the angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) tends to produce stronger results. Fast-moving planets like the Sun and Moon produce more transient effects.
A transit alone rarely produces a major event unless it is supported by the running Mahadasha and Antardasha. This is a key principle in Vedic timing: the Dasha sets the stage, and the transit triggers the event within that window. For example, a Jupiter transit over your natal Moon during a Jupiter Mahadasha is far more significant than the same transit occurring during a period ruled by a different planet.
Each planet moves at a different speed. The Moon changes sign roughly every 2.5 days. The Sun moves through one sign per month. Mars takes about 45 days per sign on average. Jupiter spends approximately 1 year per sign. Saturn takes about 2.5 years per sign, and it also goes retrograde for roughly 4.5 months each year, which can cause it to revisit a sign it has already passed through.
